The sun setting over the sea at Ras Rmel

Best Time to Visit Djerba

Warm sea from June to October, gentle sun in spring and autumn, mild winters — and a few dates worth planning around.

Djerba has a dry, sunny climate with hot summers and mild winters. Rain falls mainly between October and March, and even then usually in short bursts. The sea warms up slowly: it is comfortable for most swimmers from June to October.

The short answer

  • Best overall: May–June and September–October — warm days, swimmable sea (from late May), fewer crowds.
  • Hottest and busiest: July and August — beach weather every day, high prices, very hot afternoons and crowded hotels.
  • Best for the Sahara: October to April, when the desert is bearable.
  • Quietest and cheapest: November to March — mild and often sunny, but too cool for most swimmers.

Wind and seaweed

Djerba can be breezy, particularly in spring and autumn. Wind cools hot days but can cancel boat trips and leave seaweed on east-coast beaches. If one beach is rough, the opposite side of the island is often calmer.

Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, which moves about 11 days earlier each year, many local cafés and restaurants close in the daytime and open after sunset, when the streets come alive. Hotels and tourist areas operate normally. It is a fascinating time to visit if you are respectful.

The El Ghriba pilgrimage

In spring, around the Jewish holiday of Lag BaOmer, pilgrims gather at El Ghriba. The date changes each year; security is very tight and tourist access to the synagogue may be limited.

Prices and school holidays

Hotel prices peak in July and August and during European school holidays, including Easter. Booking two to three months ahead secures the best choice in peak season; in winter, last-minute deals are common. Compare current rates on our where to stay page.
