Djerba sits at the doorstep of the Tunisian south. Across the causeway or the Ajim ferry, the land rises to the Dahar uplands, studded with Berber villages and ksour, and beyond them the sand sea of the Grand Erg Oriental begins. A day trip here is the most memorable thing many visitors do in Tunisia.
Where you can go in a day
- Tataouine & Chenini — about 2–2.5 hours each way. Ksar Ouled Soltane, Ksar Hadada, the hill village of Chenini and Star Wars locations. The most popular day trip.
- Matmata — about 3 hours each way. Underground pit houses and the hotel used as Luke Skywalker’s home.
- Ksar Ghilane — about 3.5–4 hours each way. The nearest true Sahara dunes, a warm spring and a Roman fort.
Most tours combine two or three of these, leave around 6–7 am and return between 6 and 9 pm. You will spend a good part of the day in a vehicle — choose a 4x4 tour with a small group if comfort matters.
| Driving time each way | Highlights | Best as | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tataouine & Chenini | ≈ 2–2.5 h | Ksour, Chenini, Star Wars sites | Day trip |
| Matmata | ≈ 3 h | Troglodyte houses, Star Wars hotel | Day trip, or with Tataouine |
| Ksar Ghilane | ≈ 3.5–4 h | Dunes, warm spring, Roman fort | Overnight, or a long day |
| Douz & Tozeur | ≈ 4–5 h+ | Gateway oasis towns, salt lake | 2–3 days |
Day trip or overnight?
If you have the time, sleep in the desert. A two-day tour lets you see the dunes at sunset and sunrise, when the light is best and the heat is lowest, spend the evening around a campfire and break up the long drives. Camps around Ksar Ghilane range from simple tents to more comfortable fixed camps.
If you only have one day, choose Tataouine and Chenini for culture and film locations, or Ksar Ghilane for dunes — trying to see everything in one day means more time on the road.
Star Wars in southern Tunisia
George Lucas filmed parts of Star Wars (1977) and The Phantom Menace (1999) in southern Tunisia and named Luke’s home planet after Tataouine. Near Djerba, the best-known locations are the Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata (the Lars homestead interior) and Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada near Tataouine. Some sets further west, such as Mos Espa near Tozeur, are too far for a day trip from Djerba.
What to bring
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and a scarf against sun, wind and sand.
- A warm layer from October to April — desert mornings and nights are cold.
- Cash in dinars for drinks, tips, camel rides and small entrance fees.
- Comfortable shoes for the stairways of the ksour and the paths of Chenini.
- A swimsuit for the spring at Ksar Ghilane.
Safety
These routes are visited daily by organised tours. Some areas near the Libyan and Algerian borders are subject to travel warnings by foreign governments, so check your own government’s current advice and travel with a licensed operator. Avoid driving desert tracks on your own.
When to go
October to April is the comfortable season. In July and August, midday temperatures in the south are extreme; summer tours start very early and include long breaks.
