A smooth golden sand dune at Ksar Ghilane under a blue sky

Ksar Ghilane

An oasis on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, with a warm spring.

Ksar Ghilane is a palm oasis on the north-eastern edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, the great sand sea that stretches into Algeria. It is the closest place to Djerba where you can walk straight from the palms into rolling Sahara dunes.

The oasis grew up around a warm spring that feeds a natural pool, where visitors swim among the palms. Around it are desert camps with tents, and operators offering camel rides and quad-bike excursions into the dunes. A ride of about an hour across the sand brings you to the ruins of Tisavar, a small Roman fort on the frontier of the empire.

Day trips from Djerba are long but possible; staying overnight in a camp gives you the sunset, the stars and the cool early morning in the dunes.
