Clear turquoise water and moored boats off the beach at Aghir

Aghir & the south-east coast

Quieter beaches, clear water and a small fishing port.

South of the main hotel strip, around the small port of Aghir and the village of Lalla Hadhria, the east coast of Djerba becomes quieter. The water is often especially clear and shallow here, and the beaches run for long stretches towards El Kantara with only a few large resorts.

Aghir’s little harbour shelters fishing boats and some of the excursion boats that run trips along the coast. Inland, Djerba Explore and its crocodile farm are a few minutes away.

It is a good base for travellers who want beach time without the busiest part of the Zone Touristique, and an easy drive from the causeway if you plan a day trip to the south.

Top things to do: Aghir & the south-east coast

Swim in clear water

The shallow, sandy seabed makes the water look turquoise on calm days. Bring water shoes for rocky patches near the harbour.

Ride at sunset

Camel and horse rides in the lagoons south of the hotel zone are among the best-rated activities on the island.

Take a boat to Hessi Jerbi

Small local boats run to the white-sand beach of Hessi Jerbi, towards Zarzis — a quieter alternative to the Flamingo Island pirate boats.
